At Pillar & Peacock, Southern culture is not just a backdrop. It is the heartbeat of how we approach design. The warmth, charm, and storytelling traditions of the South inspire us to create homes that feel lived-in and layered. A home should be authentic and welcoming, blending history, personality, and comfort in every detail.

This philosophy guided us in transforming a special lake house perched above the Tennessee River in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. Built in 1987, the home’s rugged stone exterior and tranquil setting capture the true spirit of the South, a place where nature and tradition come together effortlessly.

The family who owns the home wanted a second residence that felt both elevated and easy. It is a place where wet bathing suits and towels hang over the porch railing, where kids run barefoot from the water, and where everyone feels free to let loose and enjoy time together. It needed to reflect a love of traditional Southern design while embracing the laid-back energy of lakehouse living. They wanted a home where hosting a client dinner felt just as natural as grilling with the kids after a swim.

From the start, the house had great bones. Stone and wood on the exterior, along with a classic stone fireplace inside, gave it timeless character. But the layout felt closed off and disconnected from its surroundings. We partnered with local builder Steve Hatcher to open up the space, removing walls and adding structural columns to create a natural connection between the kitchen, living room, and the panoramic river views just beyond.

We also replaced a tight, outdated spiral staircase with a safer design that improved the flow between levels. Reworking the guest bedroom and closet allowed the new layout to come together with ease. Inside, we blended rich finishes and high-quality, durable fabrics to create a sense of relaxed luxury. Every detail was chosen to be beautiful and practical. Nothing feels too precious. It is a home made for living, where elegance meets ease. Rustic elements, such as the original stone fireplace, stay true to the home’s lakehouse charm, while layered textiles, curated lighting, and thoughtful millwork bring softness and sophistication.

Throughout the process, we stayed grounded in the values that guide all of our work. This is a home that honors history, feels deeply personal, and encourages connection. It is welcoming, unfussy, and full of personality.
