The University of Alabama has undertaken a significant renovation and expansion of McLure Library, a historic building that has served generations of students. This project addresses critical infrastructure needs while preserving the building’s architectural heritage and providing modernized spaces for current and future academic pursuits.
A Historic Building Restored
Originally constructed in 1925 and updated in 1954, McLure Library has been a longstanding fixture on University Boulevard. Over the years, the building required extensive maintenance and upgrades. The recent renovation comprehensively addressed mechanical, electrical, safety and accessibility systems while maintaining the building’s distinctive brickwork, limestone columns and window detailing. Situated alongside Autherine Lucy Hall, McLure Library continues to contribute to the University’s historic streetscape.

Improved Program Integration
An important aspect of the project was relocating the School of Library and Information Sciences (SLIS) from Gorgas Library to McLure Library. This move brings SLIS closer to Reese Phifer Hall, enhancing collaboration within the College of Communication and Information Sciences. The renovation also ensures that the College of Education’s programs remain accommodated within the facility, effectively balancing the needs of multiple academic units.

Accessibility and Facility Upgrades
The renovation includes the installation of a new elevator and vertical circulation to improve accessibility for all users. A newly constructed entrance leads to a thoughtfully designed plaza featuring brick pavers, seating walls and ambient lighting, providing an inviting space for gathering and study. The access plaza along University Boulevard was reconstructed to meet current safety standards while preserving the building’s historic appearance. Internally, former stack areas have been converted into flexible, general-use spaces that align with contemporary academic needs.
