Father and son hunting outdoors

A new scholarship is giving Alabama teens the chance to step outside, learn new skills, and connect with the state’s rich outdoor heritage. The AWF Thomas and Cindy Harris Foundation Shooting Sports Scholarship Fund, created by the Alabama Wildlife Federation (AWF) in partnership with the Thomas and Cindy Harris Foundation, is now accepting applications for Alabama youth ages 12–16.

Designed to remove barriers to outdoor experiences, the scholarship covers the full cost of learning opportunities at premier shooting sports facilities across Alabama, including Selwood Farm, Pursell Farms, Lower Wetumpka Shotgun Sports Club, and others throughout the state.  It is meant for those in need of a “first-time” experience in shooting sports.

Teens who participate will gain much more than target practice—they’ll learn firearm safety, respect for the outdoors, responsibility, and confidence. Each applicant applies alongside a parent or guardian, ensuring the experience strengthens family bonds as well as outdoor skills.

“Outdoor traditions are a key part of Alabama’s heritage,” said Thomas Harris. “This program helps preserve those traditions while empowering the next generation to embrace the outdoors.”

Tim Gothard, Executive Director of AWF, added: “This scholarship is about more than shooting sports. It’s about fostering a love of Alabama’s outdoors and outdoor pursuits that can last a lifetime.”

Applications are open now at alabamawildlife.org/shooting-sports-scholarship-fund-for-alabama-youth.
