Blue Feather Candle Company began during one of the most challenging seasons of Karen and Mark Williams’s lives. What started as a small creative escape soon became a symbol of hope and healing. Rooted in faith and inspired by Psalm 91:4—“He will cover you with his feathers; you will take refuge under his wings”—the name Blue Feather reflects the comfort and protection they felt during that time. What began as a simple act of making something beautiful has grown into a business built on gratitude, resilience, and the desire to share light with others. This fall, Karen brings that same warmth and purpose to Birmingham as she joins the lineup of makers at Made South Market.

How did you begin your journey as a maker?

A: My husband was admitted to the hospital on Christmas Day of 2019, which marked the beginning of a challenging multiple

year medical journey. Amid all the uncertainty and challenges we faced, I needed a distraction to navigate the emotional storms. This led me to explore and master the art of candle-making. This provided me with a much needed creative outlet during this time.

Where do you find inspiration for your work?

A: Following my husband Mark’s challenging medical journey, I dedicated myself to creating the cleanest-burning candles possible. After months of thorough research, I chose coconut wax, combined with premium fragrance oils, which enabled me to achieve my goal of crafting a high quality candle.

Who or what are your biggest artistic or creative influences?

A: My primary inspiration for candle-making was to craft a clean burning product that prioritizes health and quality. This commitment led me to select coconut wax, which is renowned for its clean burning properties with minimal soot. Along with it being eco friendly and sustainable, it offers superior scent throw, and is non toxic and safe.

How does living in the South influence your materials, style, or mission?

A: Living in the South shapes both what we make and why we make it. Our candles are more than products—they’re a way to share our story and the values we hold dear. Here, community, faith, and resilience are central, and my husband Mark’s journey as a medical miracle reminds us daily of the blessings and grace that inspire our mission.

What’s the project or product you’re most proud of and why?

A: I am most proud of our Journey Collection, a group of six candles, each uniquely named to reflect a chapter in our personal story. Every candle in this collection expresses a distinct narrative that honors our journey through the storms we experienced. One example would be our scent Kindred, which is named for all of the people who stood in the gap and prayed for us during Mark’s medical journey.

What’s your perspective on the culture of making in the South?

A: I think the culture of making in the South is rooted in community, creativity, and care. People here value craftsmanship and the story behind a product, and there’s a growing appreciation for clean, high-quality, and sustainable goods. As consumers become more intentional about what they bring into their homes, Southern makers have an opportunity to share not just their products, but the thought, skill, and passion that go into creating them

What advice would you give to emerging makers?

A: Discover your passion and pursue it with patience and persistence. My journey in candle-making included many setbacks. I have a graveyard of failed candles! Stay resilient and don’t give up.
