Fall in Alabama is always a fan favorite. With ideal temperatures and the holiday season in sight, the fall feeling is palpable across the state. One of the best ways to capitalize on Alabama’s loveliest season is to plan the perfect day trip. If summer is for time by the beach, fall is for time in the mountains. Mentone, in North Alabama near the Georgia line, is one of Alabama’s best-kept secrets.

We have put together a guide to 24 hours in Alabama’s most relaxing mountain town.

Sunrise and Sunny-Side Up
Our recommendation for lodging is at Andiamo Lodge. The creative concept of dynamic duo Colleen Duffley and husband Steve Carpenter, Andiamo Lodge is known as Mentone’s first experience lodge. Beautifully designed and effortlessly executed, every detail is taken care of by the Andiamo team. Start the day at sunrise and enjoy a quick breakfast at Andiamo. They offer a range of pastries followed by a breakfast of gourmet caliber. Nearly all the food offered by the lodge is locally or regionally sourced. With seasonally and sustainably crafted menus, breakfast at the Andiamo is sure to satisfy.
Upon special request, Andiamo will pack your very own picnic for the day which makes exploring the region’s outdoors even simpler.

Lay Back at Little River Canyon
After breakfast, pack up the car and start off southward toward Little River Canyon. Less than a half-hour drive, Little River Canyon is a lovely spot to spend time in nature and appreciate the changing of the seasons. Fall will see the changing of the leaves which is a sight sure to impress. Etched into Lookout Mountain and boasting depths of more than 600 feet, the canyon is a must-see.

If you’re looking for a nature outing even closer to town, Desoto State Park is another amazing stop to make. For the ambitious, plan to appreciate both while in the area.

An Electic Afternoon
After enjoying your picnic among Mentone’s most picturesque views, head into downtown Mentone to absorb a little local culture. The shops at Log Cabin Village are your best bet for getting a true feel for the town. The shops feature a wide range of wares from arts and antiques to soaps and sundries.

A Moment of Silence
After a long day of hiking and homewares, head back to the lodge to enjoy some quiet time. The best part of fall in Alabama is the way that everything seems to settle into itself. Take a moment to sit on the porch and appreciate the stillness.

Wind Down at The Wildflower Cafe
Once you have worked up a hunger, it’s time to head to The Wildflower Cafe. A wonderfully “hippie-chic” establishment, The Wildflower Cafe is a Mentone must-see. Often featuring local singers and musicians, your dinner will be not only delicious but delightful with a menu suited to every taste.
