Hot Air Balloon Festival

As May arrives, Alabama’s calendar starts to feel just as full as the season itself. Across the state, weekends are shaped by long-standing traditions, live music under open skies, and festivals that bring entire communities together. From the coastal waters of Bayou La Batre to downtown Birmingham and up to Albertville, this week’s lineup covers a little bit of everything. However you choose to spend it, there is no shortage of ways to get out and take it all in.

77th Annual Blessing of the Fleet

May 2–3 | Bayou la Batre

Along the coast, one of Alabama’s most meaningful traditions returns with the 77th Annual Blessing of the Fleet. What began decades ago as a simple prayer for local fishermen has grown into a full weekend celebration rooted in the town’s seafood heritage. Shrimp boats, decorated from bow to stern, line the bayou before making their way through the water in a colorful procession, where blessings are offered for safe journeys and a successful season. Beyond the ceremony, the weekend fills out with live music, arts and crafts, family-friendly activities, and plenty of fresh Gulf seafood—from fried staples to gumbo cook-offs.

Furnace Chicken Fest at Sloss Furnaces

May 2 | Birmingham

In Birmingham, Sloss Furnaces sets the stage for a festival that leans equal parts food and music. Furnace Chicken Fest brings together a wide range of chicken dishes inspired by global flavors, all served against one of the city’s most recognizable industrial backdrops. Live performances from local and touring artists keep the energy going throughout the day. More than a traditional festival, the event feels like a citywide gathering, drawing different corners of Birmingham into one shared space.

Alice Cooper in Concert

May 1 | Albertville | Sand Mountain Amphitheater

Albertville gets a dose of theatrical rock as Alice Cooper takes the stage for one night only. Known for transforming concerts into full-scale productions, his “Alice’s Attic” tour leans into the dramatic and unexpected, blending music with a horror-inspired stage show. Expect a mix of classic hits and newer material, all delivered with the kind of spectacle that has defined his performances for decades.

22nd Annual Gulf Coast Hot Air Balloon Festival

April 30–May 2 | Foley

In Foley, the Gulf Coast Hot Air Balloon Festival brings color to the sky all weekend long. Balloons rise over OWA Parks & Resort, creating a familiar and crowd-favorite sight, while this year adds something new with a choreographed drone show lighting up the night on Friday and Saturday. Throughout the weekend, Downtown OWA stays busy with live entertainment, activities, and plenty of ways to spend time between launches.

Alabama Symphony Youth Orchestra Spring Concert

May 2 | Birmingham

For a change of pace, the Alabama Symphony Youth Orchestra offers a more refined way to spend the weekend. Taking the stage at the Alys Stephens Center, the ensemble of more than 65 young musicians delivers a performance that highlights both technical skill and dedication. The free concert features a range of classical works and gives audiences a chance to experience some of the state’s emerging talent up close.

Pizitz Concert in the Courtyard: Rising Iris

May 2 | Birmingham

Downtown Birmingham keeps things laid-back as the Pizitz Concert Series wraps up its spring run. Rising Iris brings a local energy to the courtyard, reflecting the momentum they have been building across the city. The setting pairs well with food, drinks, and an easygoing afternoon atmosphere, making it a simple addition to any Saturday plans while offering a chance to discover local music.

From coastal traditions and sky-high displays to live music and community gatherings, this week highlights the variety that defines Alabama in late spring. Each stop offers something different, making it easy to plan a full weekend or leave room for something unexpected along the way. Wherever you land, there is plenty happening across the state.
