There is something about spring in Alabama that almost feels sacred. It’s soft pink and white azaleas in bloom, and Easter dresses pressed and ready. It’s patio dinners that stretch long into the evening, baseball games under wide blue skies, and weekends filled with weddings and festivals.

With the change in season comes a familiar ritual: the closet refresh. Heavy layers are tucked away, replaced with air blouses, crisp white denim and dresses that move easily in the breeze. In the South, spring is when women pull out all the stops. Dressing beautifully just adds to the allure of the new season.

To see what Alabama women will be wearing this year, SoulGrown spoke with boutiques across the state—and while each store has its own point of view, clear trends are emerging. This spring strikes a balance between romance and retro influence, bold color and timeless staples—all with versatility at the center.

The Patterns and Silhouettes Defining Spring

Femininity will always be the core of southern fashion–and this year it’s arriving in both confidence and nostalgia. Florals are of course leading the way. At Splurge in Montgomery, florals remain “truly timeless for spring,” a staple that never feels out of place once the weather warms. But this season they’re being joined by a wider range of interpretations. Effie’s in Homewood & Tuscaloosa is seeing delicate floral patterns with a distinctly romantic feel–soft, airy, and undeniably feminine. Meanwhile, Hemline notes that florals are going bold, with large-scale prints and a retro influence that feels both playful and polished.

The dreaminess of these styles is not just found in the prints, the silhouette plays a huge role as well. At Splurge, puffy sleeves are “still very much in,” a detail that adds both softness and structure without feeling overly dramatic. Over at Effie’s, appliqué details are especially popular this season, adding what they describe as a unique and refreshing return to “soft, feminine clothing.” Hemline is seeing those delicate styles show up in playful yet polished ways: from bow accents to button-front dresses, some styled with a blazer-like structure. The effect blends structure with sweetness, leaning into a balanced look, filled with polka dots, geometric patterns, and bold color.

Even hemlines are telling two different stories this season. Splurge says midi and maxi lengths are “definitely leading the way,” offering the kind of movement and versatility that works for everything from Sunday church services to spring weddings. Meanwhile, Hemline reports that mini skirts are making a comeback, adding a youthful, confident edge to the season’s lineup.

The Color Story

When it comes to colors, it seems like some stores will be taking the traditional spring routes, while others are going bold. Across Alabama, boutiques are seeing everything from soft pastels to richly saturated hues.

At Effie’s, the palette leans light and airy. Soft pinks, fresh mint greens, and pale blues are defining the season, creating what the boutique describes as a look that feels delicate and refreshing. The look is gentle but polished, the kind of shades that feel perfectly at home for a spring luncheon or Easter service.

Meanwhile at Splurge, classic Southern spring colors are holding strong. Greens and yellows are everywhere, and pink remains a perennial favorite. Alexia, the founder of the store, notes, “we’re in the South–pink will always be a spring staple.” The result is cheerful, wearable colors that feel both familiar and crisp.

But not every boutique is leaning soft. At Hemline, richer hues are taking center stage. Acacia green, amarantha—a deeper purple tone—alexandrite teal, and burnt sienna are making a statement this season. Instead of muted pastels, these shades offer depth and confidence, bringing a bold edge to spring wardrobes.

The statewide picture is layered and dynamic. Some boutiques are embracing a lighter, more classic palette, while others are championing saturated color, captivating the attention of all. Whether soft and understated or vivid and expressive, Alabama’s spring fashion proves there’s room for it all in the season ahead.

Updating Your Wardrobe Without Starting Over

Spring cleaning can make you feel like it’s time for a full wardrobe reset—but Alabama boutique owners say you don’t have to start from scratch to feel refreshed.

At Splurge, the advice begins with one staple: white denim. A great pair of white jeans—or a softer off-white, cream, or “wheat” tone—becomes a spring foundation. Paired with a simple tee, lightweight sweater, or floral blouse, it’s one of the season’s most versatile investments.

Effie’s echoes that mindset, encouraging women to build around classic pieces instead of chasing every trend. A white pant or skirt pairs effortlessly with pastels or prints. “Rather than chasing every trend, we encourage women to select one or two styles that they love and can relate to,” they share. Personal style should feel authentic and effortless.

Matching sets are another smart addition. Worn together, they create a polished look for showers and soirées. Styled separately, they stretch your closet even further: paired with denim, Mary Janes, or a simple tank for everyday wear.

Accessories complete the refresh. Hemline is seeing chunky gold jewelry return, with statement bracelets elevating even the simplest outfits. Woven shoes add natural texture, and gold flat sandals remain a dependable finishing touch.

This spring, a thoughtful refresh beats a total reset. A few foundation pieces, intentional trends, and updated accessories can make your closet feel new—without losing the personal style that makes getting dressed fun.

Inspiration Meets Real Life

For many of us, inspiration may start online—but it doesn’t end there.

At Effie’s, social media continues to be a primary driver of style direction. The team enjoys watching how influencers curate full looks, even if, as they note the “effortless” appearance often takes more work than it seems. Hemline echoes the same sentiment, social media and peer influence drive us all. But they also mention pop culture moments like Emily in Paris as shaping what customers are gravitating towards this season.

But our  screens aren’t the only source of style influence. At Splurge, inspiration is just as likely in everyday life. Inspiration can be found in life, at youth baseball games, church on Sunday mornings, or during a casual conversation that starts with, “Where did you get that?” Approachable, real-life influence, paired with what we see online, shapes all of our closets.

Whether it is Easter Sunday, a spring wedding, or just a Tuesday at the ballpark, getting dressed is all part of the fun! This spring is the perfect opportunity to step out of your closet comfort zone and try on a new style, and it is not as hard (or expensive!) as you might think. Lean into the floral patterns, bold colors, or the arm candy—after all, spring in Alabama has never been subtle.
