The aggressive nature of Melody’s brain tumor meant time was limited, so when she learned the Alabama chapter of the Make-A-Wish Foundation would grant her wish, she didn’t waste a minute making her aspirations clear. The Reeltown High School student and saxophone player wished for new band uniforms, knowing she would likely never wear one herself. She didn’t—Melody worked with her band director to design them, but passed away before they were finished.
Just in time for the final home football game of the following season, the new uniforms arrived. Each one included a reminder of her selfless wish—a custom logo incorporating her initials, created with her brother and stitched into every jacket collar. Her bandmates wore them with pride and played their hearts out. Make-A-Wish presented her family with a framed uniform, and much of the community attended wearing commemorative pins bearing her logo and a fitting phrase: “In our hearts, there will always ring a Melody.”
Now, with every note floating from her bandmates’ instruments, the impact of Melody’s wish continues to resonate. Since 2012, Make-A-Wish Alabama has fulfilled nearly 2,000 wishes like hers, saying “yes” to children ages two and a half to 18 who are facing critical illnesses. But for every wish granted, two more children still wait as the foundation works to secure the necessary funding.
Walking For a Cause on the Pinhoti Trail
Helping raise that funding is what drives hundreds of participants each year to take part in the annual Trailblaze Challenge. Hikers commit to completing 26.3 miles in a single day along northeast Alabama’s Pinhoti Trail, while also raising money in the months leading up to the event. They reach out to friends, family, coworkers, and even strangers to support their efforts through donations.
This year, I’ll be among the more than 275 Trailblazers. The funds we raise help Make-A-Wish send children and their families to the beach, to sporting events, to experience the magic of Disney World, or even to meet a favorite athlete or YouTube personality.

Turning Challenges Into Hope
These wishes provide more than trips or celebrity encounters—they offer hope. Studies show that wishes can positively impact health outcomes and give children the strength to keep fighting. Nine out of ten medical providers say a wish helps reduce anxiety and depression, and nine out of ten parents report improvements in their child’s emotional well-being. The foundation covers every detail and 100 percent of the cost, allowing families to focus entirely on the experience.
So far this year, Trailblazers have raised more than $610,000. While that is a significant amount, the average wish costs around $10,000. Each year, participants take on the physical challenge not only to raise awareness, but to help fund these life-changing experiences. While the goal is shared, the reasons for participating vary.
Alabama Communities in Motion
During a recent 11-mile training hike through Oak Mountain State Park, fellow hikers shared what motivates them. Some have seen the impact of a wish firsthand. Others simply believe in the mission. One newcomer joined to connect with fellow outdoor enthusiasts, while another took on the challenge to improve stamina and overall health. One participant hikes in honor of a child a dear friend lost.
When people ask how I got involved, the answer is simple: I saw a post on Instagram. I don’t remember exactly what it said, but it led me to the Make-A-Wish website and eventually to an information session. As I learned more about the physical demands of the hike and the fundraising commitment, I questioned whether it was the right fit.
Then I heard Melody’s story, and any hesitation disappeared. Yes, we will begin before dawn and hike 26 miles over challenging terrain with loaded packs. There will be sweat, blisters, and sore muscles. But compared to what these children and their families face, the challenge feels small.
Like the children we support, Trailblazers have wishes too. We hope our journey encourages others to join us in the future, but more importantly, we hope it inspires support for Make-A-Wish—ensuring more dreams can become reality.
