In the 1950s, Dr. Wernher von Braun and his team of German-born rocketeers changed the course of history for Huntsville—and the United States—forever. At the city’s Marshall Space Flight Center, they created the rockets that put the first U.S. satellite into orbit and sent men to the moon. Their arrival and the stunning advances they made in their field put a swift end to Huntsville’s former title as the Watercress Capital of the World and cemented its reputation as the Rocket City.

In addition to his contributions to America’s space discovery, von Braun is also credited with supporting another very important part of Huntsville’s makeup: the U.S. Space & Rocket Center. As director of the Marshall Space Flight Center, von Braun proposed the idea of creating a museum dedicated to space in conjunction with the U.S. Army Missile Command and NASA. His vision became reality in 1970. Since then, more than 17 million people have discovered the wonder of the Last Frontier at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center.

With more than 1,500 items of space hardware in its permanent collection, as well as several rotating exhibits and dozens of interactive experiences that make you feel like you’re truly out of this world, the Space & Rocket Center is a must-visit for anyone in the area. 3. Learn to be an underwater astronaut

While you may have your head in the clouds dreaming about space, the Space & Rocket Center challenges visitors to give thought to another world entirely—one that’s found in the opposite direction, in the depths of the ocean. With three signature experiences, you can spend considerable time learning to be an underwater astronaut. Sea TREK is a fully guided underwater walking experience where participants wear a specialized diving helmet allowing them to breathe normally underwater. DIVR+ is a virtual reality snorkeling experience where participants wear a waterproof VR headset that provides top-of-the-line sensory feedback as they swim in a heated pool. To complete the experience, complete SCUBA Underwater Astronaut Training. Instructors lead participants through a series of challenging and fun tasks that gives them a glimpse into what it’s like in space—just 24 feet underwater rather than 50 miles in the air.
