Alabama is home to an impressive range of amazing foods. Each city has its own unique culinary footprint, and we have set out to create guides to the best restaurants in each of the state’s major cities. Our inaugural guide is for the state’s capital city: Montgomery.

Vintage Year

“From dinner with friends and family to the most memorable special occasions, we have been an important part of the fabric of Montgomery’s social scene since 1984. What began as Montgomery’s only specialty wine shop soon became a destination for gourmet lunches to accompany the shop’s extensive selection of wines. Soon dinner entrees were added and the rest is history. Vintage Year has held the honor as one of the Capital’s favorite dining experiences for decades with over a quarter century of stories to be told. Over the years, the restaurant has changed ownership but the focus remains the same.”

Central

According to Alabama News Center, “For a fine-dining experience that spotlights unique dishes made from regionally sourced ingredients, look no further than Central in downtown Montgomery. Central is an upscale casual restaurant with an eclectic menu that offers a memorable meal no matter what you’re craving. Its dinner entrees include fresh seafood from the Alabama Gulf, hot honey fried chicken and pasta made in-house. Just make sure you save room for a slice of pistachio cheesecake for dessert.”

Filet and Vine

“Filet & Vine Market, Deli and Bottle Shoppe started in 1997 by Derk Lyerly in Old Cloverdale, Montgomery, Alabama. After six months of renovations, we opened our doors to the public in March of 1998. In 1999, we received the emerging Thirty award from the Montgomery Chamber of Commerce honoring our new business.
Over the years we have expanded twice, we now occupy over 6500 sq ft, employ 18 people and have seating for 140 people. Our market features hand cut steaks, sliced Boarshead meats, fresh produce, casseroles to go, gourmet groceries, salads and our delicious seasonings. Our deli features gourmet sandwiches, soups, and salad bar, and one of Montgomery’s favorite meat and two! The Bottle shoppe has centra Alabama’s largest selection of wine and beer, with over 15,000 bottles of wine and over 750 types of beers. If we don’t have it we can order it!”

Chris’ Hotdogs

“For over a century, the constant presence on Dexter Avenue has been Chris’ Hotdogs. Founded in 1917, this mgm landmark serves hotdogs enjoyed by people from all walks of life, rich and poor, black and white, young and old, from all over the world. Notable patrons include Franklin D. Roosevelt, Presidents Bush 41 & 43, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Elvis Presley, and every Alabama Governor since 1917.”

The Tipping Point

“Known as one of the top “Third Places” in the country, The Tipping Point combines restaurant, bar and the great outdoors into one fantastic space. Perfect for those searching for craft beer, comfort food or the famous Kid’s Hill, The Tipping Point attracts all ages and interests. We are kid friendly, and dog friendly (of course)!”

Cahawba House

According to The New York Times, “At the bustling Cahawba House, breakfast is all about the buttery biscuits ($1 each) accompanied by local honey, organic maple syrup or local jam (each $. 75). Add apple wood smoked bacon, pimento cheese and fried green tomato to build your own sustaining ’Bama breakfast. Then head to the gracious neighborhood of Cloverdale to visit , the last home of F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald. The pair met in 1918 in Montgomery when he was stationed at a nearby army camp in her hometown. They returned to the 1910-era home with their daughter, Scottie, in 1931 and stayed for about six months before Zelda was hospitalized for mental illness. Galleries feature exhibits devoted to the couple’s courtship, Zelda’s paintings, Scottie’s memories and Fitzgerald’s literature and decline. The curator, Sarah Powell, often guides tours, enriching the story with local details.”

Wishbone Cafe
