As the Alabama sun blazes through the warmer months, protecting your skin from its harsh effects is more important than ever. From sunburns to dehydration and long-term damage, high temperatures and intense UV exposure can take a serious toll.
Fortunately, with expert guidance from Dr. Rachel Pflederer, MD, FAAD, FACMS, a board-certified dermatologist and fellowship-trained Mohs surgeon at Village Dermatology, you can keep your skin healthy, radiant, and safe all season long.
Alabama’s warm, humid climate makes for great outdoor adventures, but it also increases the risk of sun damage. Prolonged exposure to UV rays can cause premature aging, hyperpigmentation, and most critically, skin cancer. “Protecting your skin from the sun is one of the best investments you can make,” says Dr. Pflederer. “A few key habits can make a huge difference when it comes to the health of your skin.”
Dr. Pflederer shares her top recommendations for protecting your skin from the Alabama heat below:
Dr. Pflederer’s Summer Skincare Tips
- Prioritize Daily Sunscreen Use
Broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher is non-negotiable. Apply it every morning, rain or shine! If you are in the sun, sweating, or swimming, reapply every two hours. Mineral-based sunscreens containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide offer excellent protection and are gentle on sensitive skin.
- Seek Shade During Peak Hours
The sun’s rays are most intense between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. If possible, plan outdoor activities for early morning or late afternoon. If you’re outside, find shade under umbrellas, trees, or wear a wide-brimmed hat to give your skin extra protection.
- Wear Protective Clothing
Lightweight, long-sleeved shirts, wide-brimmed hats, and UV-protective sunglasses can significantly reduce direct sun exposure. Look for clothing with a UPF rating, which indicates how well the fabric shields against UV rays. I wear a visor or a hat every time I do an outdoor activity.

- Stay Hydrated for Healthy Skin
Alabama’s heat can lead to dehydration, which in turn affects skin health. Drinking plenty of water helps maintain your skin’s moisture barrier and prevents it from becoming dry and irritated. Infuse your water with citrus or berries for added antioxidants that support skin health.
- Be Mindful of Heat-Related Skin Conditions
Summer can exacerbate conditions like heat rash, acne, and rosacea. I suggest using lightweight, oil-free skincare products and avoiding heavy creams that can trap sweat and bacteria.
- Check Your Skin Regularly & Keep Your Dermatology Appointments
Regular skin exams can help catch early warning signs of skin cancer. Look for new or changing moles, sores that don’t heal, or any suspicious spots. Annual dermatology check-ups are crucial for early detection and treatment.
By following these expert tips, you can enjoy Alabama’s warm weather while keeping your skin protected and healthy. “Prevention is key when it comes to sun safety,” emphasizes Dr. Pflederer. “Taking simple steps now can prevent serious skin damage and health risks in the future.”
