Our Alabama State Parks Passport series highlights all of the stunning outdoor spaces throughout the state that make for the perfect seasonal getaway. The sixteenth in our series is Roland Cooper State Park.
According to Alabama State Parks, Roland Cooper State Park in Camden, Alabama, offers visitors a number of opportunities to enjoy the outdoors, from birding and fishing to relaxing cabin stays.

Nature & Recreation
Fishing is what draws many to Roland Cooper. Local anglers can enjoy Southwest Alabama’s best at Dannelly Reservoir. Visitors have access to boat launches, and the state park encourages attendance at their seasonal fishing tournaments. Fishermen can expect a great catch from the park’s healthy population of game fish.
For those interested in birding, the park is an ideal destination due to its proximity to the Alabama River and thickly wooded landscape. Visitors have spotted many species, from bald eagles and raptors to songbirds and osprey.
Roland Cooper State Park is also a stargazer’s dream. Officially a Dark Sky site, visitors can mark this park as the perfect place for camping out under the stars and watching meteor showers.

Accommodations
Roland Cooper State Park offers a broad range of accommodations. For those looking to enjoy a modern cabin stay, the park has three furnished large two-bedroom cabins as well as six furnished two-bedroom tiny cabins. They also have a furnished one-bedroom tiny cabin that is ADA-compliant.
For those looking for a more rustic stay, try the park’s primitive cabins or enjoy one of their many campsites. In total, they offer more than 40 improved RV sites with water, sewer, 50 and 30 amp electrical hookups, picnic tables, and grills. For a truly immersive stay, reserve one of their 14 primitive camping sites. All sites have bathrooms and showers in close proximity.

Area Attractions
Looking to extend the adventure? The area’s local history and culture can be appreciated at Gee’s Bend. According to Alabama State Parks, “Another point of interest in the area is Gee’s Bend, which was featured in the Emmy Award-winning Alabama Public Television documentary ‘The Quilt Makers of Gee’s Bend.’ The film focuses on local quilters who produce internationally celebrated quilts.” Visitors can also enjoy extensive dining and entertainment options in Montgomery or Mobile, both of which are within a two-hour drive of the park.
