After a two-year renovation process, Selma’s historic St. James Hotel is back in business and ready to take reservations. Rhaglan Hospitality took ownership of the hotel in 2018 after its initial closing in 2017 and has reopened the hotel as part of the Tapestry Collection by Hilton.
The new opening is just the latest iteration of the building’s long history in Selma that dates back to 1837 when it opened as The Brantley Hotel. At the time, it provided lodging and meals for traveling merchants trading cotton and other goods. In 1871, the hotel’s name changed to the St. James, but by the early 1890s the hotel shuttered. For the next century, the building was used for various industrial and commercial businesses including a tire recapping factory. In 1997, the building went back to its roots as a hotel through a public/private effort to restore it to its former 1800s glory.

The latest $5 million overhaul included renovating all guest rooms, bathrooms, and common areas, plus the addition of 13 new guest rooms and suites. Many of the new rooms feature balconies overlooking the Alabama River and Edmund Pettus Bridge, two of Selma’s most notable landmarks. The rest of the hotel’s 55 rooms surround an interior courtyard complete with red-brick pavers, tropical plants, a fountain, and comfortable seating areas. Renovations also included construction of a new grand stairway in the main lobby.

Today, the hotel reclaims its distinction as both Dallas County’s only full-service hotel and the country’s only remaining pre-Civil War hotel on a riverfront. Honoring its history while embracing the future, The St. James is the embodiment of old meets new. Original features like ornate cast iron balcony railings coexists with modern touches like jewel-toned velvet couches and funky gold chandeliers.
Hotel amenities include a fitness center, business center, meeting rooms, as well as an on-site, full-service restaurant and bar called Sterling. Headed by Chef David Taylor, the restaurant specializes in American and Southern classics. Breakfast options include traditional offerings like buttermilk pancakes, steak and eggs, and a Florentine omelet. The menu takes a Southern twist with large plates like the Cajun omelet made with Conecuh sausage or the shrimp and grits.

Lunch and dinner start with classic bar snacks like buffalo wings, pimento cheese dip, and boudin balls. The sandwich section includes a house special burger, Southern fried chicken sandwich, and shrimp po’boy. Entrees range from a New York strip dinner to jambalaya with Gulf shrimp.
The hotel’s grand opening is a big win for the city of Selma and its community who has fought to keep this historic building a part of their downtown landscape. It’s also a huge benefit for visitors who can once again stay in the heart of it all.
