Whether you’re celebrating something special or simply looking for an excuse to spend an evening together, Bayonet has quickly become one of Birmingham’s favorite places to settle in over fresh seafood and thoughtful cocktails. Now, the restaurant has another accolade to add to its growing list, with Tasting Table naming it Alabama’s best date night restaurant.

The national food publication recently released its list of the “Absolute Best Date Night Restaurant in Every State,” recognizing one standout restaurant in each state for its combination of atmosphere, hospitality and exceptional cuisine. For Alabama, that honor went to Bayonet, the seafood-focused restaurant from husband-and-wife team Rob and Emily McDaniel in downtown Birmingham.

Located inside the historic Berry Building, Bayonet opened in early 2025 alongside the McDaniels’ acclaimed restaurant, Helen, bringing a menu built around Gulf seafood and seasonal ingredients. Tasting Table praised the restaurant’s light-filled dining room, locally sourced menus and Rob McDaniel’s commitment to working with Gulf fishermen, highlighting dishes such as Parmesan-crusted red snapper, grouper roulade and the restaurant’s extensive oyster selection.

One of the best ways to experience Bayonet is by gathering around one of its beautifully presented seafood spreads. Fresh oysters, smoked mussels, confit octopus and razor clams arrive artfully arranged, making them perfect for sharing across the table. Beyond the raw bar, favorites include the swordfish bacon sando, a Japanese-inspired sandwich that has become one of the restaurant’s signature dishes.

Looking for a more casual introduction? Stop by during happy hour from 3 to 5 p.m. for a plate of oysters and one of Bayonet’s popular Tiny Tinis before dinner.

The latest recognition adds to an already impressive list of national honors. In 2025, Bayonet was named one of The New York Times’ “50 Best Restaurants in America Right Now,” earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand designation and was recognized by The Takeout as Alabama’s best seafood restaurant.

Rob McDaniel, a six-time James Beard Award semifinalist, and Emily McDaniel have built Bayonet around a shared commitment to celebrating Gulf seafood, seasonal ingredients and the kind of thoughtful hospitality that makes guests want to return again and again.
