Few authors inspire as much mystery and intrigue as Harper Lee. The iconic Alabamian who penned the Pulitzer Prize winning novel βTo Kill a Mockingbird,β is known for her illusiveness almost as much as her incredible talent. After publishing her debut novel in 1960, she granted few interviews, made even fewer public appearances, and didnβt publish again for more than half a century. βGo Set a Watchmen,β a continuation of the stories of the original Mockingbird characters, came out in 2015 and less than a year later Lee died at the age of 89.
Though Lee was very protective of her privacy, you can get a closer look into her life by visiting her hometown of Monroeville in South Alabama. Though βTo Kill a Mockingbirdβ is a book of fiction, several of the elements in the book are based on Leeβs life, including the setting of Maycomb which was based on Monroeville and the character Dill who was based on legendary novelist Truman Capote, a close lifelong friend of Leeβs.
For fans of the book, the author, or the 1962 feature film, a trip to Harperβs hometown is a must. Hereβs everything to see and do on a trip to Monroeville.

Tour the Old Courthouse Museum
Any visit to Monroeville should start at the historic Monroe County Courthouse, which is now the Old Courthouse Museum. In the museum, you can see the courtroom made world famous by the novel and the movie. Walk up to the balcony for a birds-eye-view of the setting for the pivotal trial scenes in the book. From this vantage point, youβll also be able to see the room through Leeβs eyes. She often sat in the balcony and watched her father practice law in the courtroom below. The courtroom in the Hollywood film adaptation of Leeβs book is a near replica of the Monroe County Courthouse. In addition to seeing the courtroom, the museum also features a βTo Kill a Mockingbirdβ exhibit called Harper Lee: In Her Own Words. Using snippets of interviews, as well as photos and memorabilia, the exhibit tells Leeβs story.

Walk Around Courthouse Square
After touring the museum, take a stroll around courthouse square, where youβll see the original red bank building where A.C. Lee, Leeβs father and real-life attorney, had his law office until he passed in 1962. Protagonist Atticus Finch, who was based on A.C., practiced law in the same building in both books.
See Leeβs Burial Site
Less than a half-mile away, you can see two more places of significance to the end of Leeβs life. You can see First United Methodist Church, where Leeβs private funeral ceremony took place, as well as the Lee family plot where Lee is buried alongside her father and sister.
Follow Birdhouse Trail
See more of the city on a walking tour of downtown along the Birdhouse Trail. Celebrate the cityβs talented artists via 25 one-of-a-kind birdhouses spread out throughout Monroe County. Each birdhouse was designed, constructed, and painted by locals and all feature unique designs. Many pay tribute to Harper Lee and βTo Kill a Mockingbird.β
