Departing from Birmingham, Alabama it was a hot, 97-degree day in June. On our 2-hour drive up I-20 to Cumberland Plateau, my wife and I quickly noticed the 12-degree temperature drop to Rising Fawn, Georgia. Nestled amidst the Southeast brow of Lookout Mountain, the new Cloudland Lodge at McLemore Resort proved a perfect blend of natural beauty and Southern hospitality. Our three-day two-night stay was a luxurious getaway we will not forget.

Perfectly placed in its natural surroundings, we felt the stresses of the real world leave our minds as we were welcomed by spectacular views and the most intentional staff. The valet team greeted us and gave us a tour of the grounds. It was abundantly clear that no shortcuts were taken in the thoughtful design—like modern Appalachia meets Scottish décor.

Cloudland’s list of amenities is endless. Perfect for adventure seekers or those in need of some R&R. Some of our favorites are below:

Infinity Edge Pool

With just two nights there we wanted to do a little of both adventure and relaxation. We quickly put our swimsuits on and grabbed a refreshing cocktail on the way to the one-of-a-kind infinity pool on the side of the brow. The afternoon was the perfect way to get into full vacation mode.

World-class Golf

Designed by renowned architects Bill Bergin and Rees Jones, McLemore Resort features two golf courses. Jones said himself, that the cliff-edge 18th hole is “one of the best finishing holes in the game of golf.” I couldn’t agree more, it was one of the most beautiful holes I’ve ever played. The 18th is fully on the brow and unlike a typical golf hole, you didn’t want it to end. My wife and I could not stop talking about it after the round as we enjoyed lunch at the McLemore clubhouse.

With one of the most recognizable holes in the game, McLemore has designed three ways for its growing crowd of golfers to play. “Friends of McLemore” can play once each season, “Stay & Play” packages are for guests, and of course, there is the traditional “Member” option as a resident or non-resident.

Dining

For culinary enthusiasts, Cloudland has five restaurants on the property that all provide an exceptional dining experience.

The resort’s fine dining restaurant, Auld Alliance was our favorite. They offered a French countryside cuisine with an “Auld” twist that made it a sort of Scottish/French fusion. After our world-class meal, we finished our bottle of wine on the patio for a gorgeous sunset.

Spa

Selah Spa was on the schedule for the afternoon. I must say it was one of the best massages I have ever had. With a wide variety of treatments and experiences to choose from, we took advantage of the cold plunge and steam rooms before our deep tissue massages.

Selah Spa is by appointment only and offers a full menu of massages, facials, treatments, and lounge experiences.

On the last day, we did not want to leave. We took advantage of the state-of-the-art workout facility and Peloton spin room before finishing our trip with a wonderful brunch at Croft.

To sum it up, we were both blown away by the Cloudland Lodge at McLemore Resort. The short retreat was one of the most tranquil and relaxing trips we have been on. Cloudland has created the perfect mountain escape. So, whether you are planning a family vacation, a romantic getaway, or a golf trip with friends, Cloudland is the perfect setting.
