MADE SOUTH Market is making its way to Birmingham this fall, bringing a curated celebration of Southern makers, artisans, and small businesses to Events at Haven on October 24th and 25th. Run by Chris and Katy Richardson, the market has built a loyal following in Franklin, Tennessee, where it has become a beloved tradition for discovering unique goods and connecting with the creative spirit of the South. Ahead of their Birmingham event, we sat down with the MADE SOUTH team to hear more about the vision behind the event, what makes it special, and why Birmingham was the natural next step.
What made you fall in love with MADE SOUTH Market in Franklin before bringing it to Birmingham?
We first experienced the MADE SOUTH Holiday Market in Franklin from the other side of the table—as makers. For six years, we set up our booth, told our story, and connected with other Southern makers. From the very beginning, the experience was different from any other market we’d been a part of. The way the guests valued the unique offerings, the thoughtful curation of the event, and the genuine hospitality from the organizers—it all created an incredible sense of community and appreciation. As makers, we felt celebrated. So when the opportunity came to jump into this business, it felt like a natural step. We knew firsthand how important MADE SOUTH could be for a small business, and we were excited to carry that forward and even expand it to other great Southern cities like Birmingham.

What makes Birmingham the perfect second home for the market?
Birmingham is full of soul. There’s great creative energy here, an appreciation for craftsmanship, and a community that values supporting local businesses and culture. It’s also home. Although we are both from North Alabama, Birmingham has been home for 17 years, and we wouldn’t trade the community we have built here to live anywhere else. Add to that a vibrant cultural mix and a growing group of talented makers, and we just had to bring MADE SOUTH to our hometown. Birmingham has welcomed our family and inspired us to do the work that we are doing, and we are honored to share this unique market experience with the community.

As a maker yourself, how important is it to have a well-curated market where you can sell your products?
Curation is everything. As a maker, you pour your heart and sweat into what you create. So when you’re accepted into a market that has been thoughtfully curated, it tells you that your work is valued and you’re in good company. That kind of environment attracts customers who are looking for quality, story, and substance. It creates the kind of environment where makers can thrive—not just sell products, but build relationships and grow their businesses. That is the driving force behind MADE SOUTH Market Events.
What can people expect at the 2025 market?
2024 was so much fun, but we are always looking to raise the bar! Guests can expect a handpicked lineup of the South’s best makers, artisans, and artists, live music from the Goat Hill String Band, tastings from featured local chefs, tastings, and cocktails featuring Dread River Distilling spirits, and a whole lot of “Friendly Southerner” hospitality. Whether folks are coming to shop, sip, taste, or just soak in all the fall vibes, we want the experience to feel warm, inspiring, and unforgettable. MADE SOUTH is more than a market—it’s a celebration of the people and stories that make the South so special.
