Alabama is home to an incredible range of state parks that have something to offer adventurers year-round. Our Alabama State Parks Passport series highlights all of the stunning outdoor spaces throughout the state that make for the perfect seasonal getaway. The twelfth in our series is Frank Jackson State Park.

According to Alabama State Parks, “This 2,050 acre park located near Opp, Alabama is a hot spot for anglers thanks to its main attraction, the 1,000-acre Lake Jackson. In addition to outstanding fishing, the park also features picnic areas, lakefront RV camping with cable TV hookups, a modern bathhouse, a boardwalk leading to an island in the lake, and more than three miles of walking trails.”

Nature

Frank Jackson State Park is an ideal destination for wildlife enthusiasts. From the park’s pedestrian bridge which connects the campground to the park’s playground, visitors can view several species of birds and fish. “The peaceful sounds of the lake lapping through the aquatic vegetation highlight the quality of life that state parks offer,” shares Alabama State Parks.

Recreation

What the park may be most well known for is its freshwater fishing. Lake Frank Jackson is appreciated for being well-stocked and managed. Visitors can expect to have the opportunity to catch everything from catfish to bass. The park offers boat launch ramps and an ADA-accessible fishing platform. The beach along the water allows access for boaters, paddlers, and swimmers.

Mark your calendars for fall when the park hosts Scarecrows in the Park. At this time of year, area businesses, organizations, groups, and locals make and decorate scarecrows that line the park’s walking trails.
