When a premature baby is born in a small community hospital or a teenager faces a sudden medical crisis far from city limits, every second matters—and the nearest advanced care can feel impossibly out of reach. Thanks to Huntsville Hospital for Women & Children’s (HHWC) new Kids Care Critical Care Transport ambulance, specialized, life-saving treatment can now begin long before a patient ever reaches the hospital door.

The new “ICU on wheels” replaces an older, high-mileage unit that was in desperate need of a full replacement, ensuring North Alabama’s youngest and most vulnerable patients keep continuous access to advanced pediatric and neonatal care.

A Regional Hub for Specialized Pediatric Care

As the only facility of its kind in North Alabama, HHWC serves as the region’s primary referral center for complex pediatric and neonatal care. It’s home to the area’s only full-service Pediatric Unit, Pediatric Emergency Department, and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, along with a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and a St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital affiliate clinic—one of only eight in the nation.

Because community hospitals across North Alabama often can’t provide that level of care, they rely on safe transfer to Huntsville. The Kids Care program serves as the bridge connecting young patients to those resources, easing one more burden for families during an already difficult time.

Decades of Dedicated Service to the Community

More than 20 years ago, a group of local grandfathers set out to help 100 critically ill children reach specialized care by funding HHWC’s very first pediatric transport ambulance. That grassroots effort has since grown into a vital regional service, operating 24/7/365 to provide rapid-response, intensive care transport for pediatric and neonatal patients from initial contact through their arrival at HHWC.

Since its founding, the Kids Care team has transported more than 11,200 children to HHWC for advanced treatment. Today, its two ambulances log more than 100,000 miles a year combined, responding to more than 700 transport requests annually across North Alabama and parts of south-central Tennessee. That round-the-clock demand takes a toll on the vehicles, and one of the program’s two ambulances had reached the end of its life, making a replacement urgent.

Inside the “ICU on Wheels”

The new Kids Care ambulance is a mobile intensive care unit built for patients ranging from premature infants as young as 22 weeks gestation to young adults aged 21. Standard emergency equipment is often too large or imprecise for such small, fragile bodies, so this vehicle is outfitted with hospital-grade technology sized for them instead—letting critical care begin at a patient’s bedside and continue uninterrupted all the way to Huntsville.

Onboard capabilities include ventilator management, high-frequency ventilation, CPAP, and BiPAP for respiratory support; real-time capnography and vital sign monitoring tailored for infants and children; and specialized neonatal care such as therapeutic hypothermia management for oxygen-deprived newborns and dedicated transport incubators.

World-Class Clinical Expertise on Board

Advanced technology is only as good as the hands that operate it, and Kids Care pairs its equipment with a team built for exactly this kind of high-stakes work. Every transport run is staffed by a Registered Nurse and a Respiratory Therapist who together bring more than 200 years of combined experience in pediatric and neonatal critical care. The team holds certifications across NRP, S.T.A.B.L.E., PALS, ENPC, ACLS, and TNCC, and trains continuously to handle complex emergencies—advanced airway management, resuscitation, continuous medication administration—the moment they arrive at a referring hospital, not just once the patient reaches HHWC.

Powered by Philanthropy and Partnership

The new ambulance wasn’t cheap, and HHWC couldn’t have done it alone. The purchase was anchored by a grant from The Caring Foundation of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama, with additional support from local donors through the Huntsville Hospital Foundation and the 2024 Huntsville Classic. That kind of philanthropic support has been the lifeblood of Kids Care since its founding, letting the hospital keep updating its fleet and technology for children across the region.
