Tailgate Takeover: your guide to Alabama gameday in Tuscaloosa

Roll Tide and welcome back to our weekly gameday town spotlight series: Tailgate Takeover. For those who have been requesting a Tuscaloosa article, your wait is over! This week, Alabama hosts South Carolina at Saban Field at Bryant-Denny Stadium on Saturday, September 26, with kickoff at 7 p.m. ET (6 p.m. CT — local Tuscaloosa time). The game will be broadcast nationally on ESPN.

The Tide’s first night game of the year comes as Alabama enters the matchup undefeated at 3-0. The Crimson Tide and Gamecocks split their last two meetings, with Alabama winning 27-25 in Tuscaloosa in 2024 before South Carolina won 29-22 in Columbia in 2025.

Getting Oriented

Most of the classic Tuscaloosa gameday experience is concentrated around campus, with The Quad, Bryant-Denny Stadium, The Strip and downtown all within easy reach of one another. University Boulevard runs through the heart of it, connecting the campus to The Strip and downtown, so it serves as an easy point of reference throughout the day. Much of the area can be explored on foot, though several of the spots on this list are just a short drive or rideshare away. And bring an extra cup of coffee — gameday starts early in Tuscaloosa, long before kickoff.

Where to Eat

The Tuscaloosa food scene has lots to offer outside the stadium gates, but don’t forget to get a stadium dog while you’re inside for the game. Dreamland BBQ, just a short way off campus, is a Tuscaloosa institution. If you’ve never been, make sure to plan a trip for a plate of ribs and white bread.

Another quintessentially Tuscaloosa institution is Rama Jama’s. Located in the shadow of Bryant-Denny Stadium, inside you’ll find wall-to-wall, museum-worthy Alabama memorabilia. They’re known for their atmosphere, their fantastic breakfast and their National Championship BLT, which adds a slice of bacon for each Alabama football national championship.

Heat Pizza, located downtown, is another great pick and large enough to easily accommodate group meals. Their artisan pizzas and cocktails will hit the spot before this week’s night game. If you’re looking for something a touch more upscale, Chuck’s Fish brings fresh Gulf seafood and sushi to a proper sit-down setting.

Where to Drink

Gallettes, located on The Strip, is about as Alabama gameday as it gets. It’s the home of the Yellowhammer, Tuscaloosa’s signature gameday cocktail, and has been serving the drink since 1976. If you don’t spend a whole lot of time there, at least walk by and give your best “Roll Tide!” to the lively crowd on the outdoor patio out front.

Innisfree Irish Pub offers a cozy, pub-style atmosphere that comes alive on gamedays. They have a full beer selection and a substantial bar menu, including their popular chicken tenders served with their signature Irish Gold sauce. If you don’t stop in to eat while you’re in town, you can take a bottle of the sauce home with you.

If you’re into the craft cocktail scene, The Gray Lady, Session, and Catch 22 are all great options. Make a craft cocktail bar crawl out of it — why not? It’s gameday!

Things to Do

The Paul W. Bryant Museum is a must for fans looking to dig into Alabama football history. The past comes alive inside, from the leather helmet era through the recent championship years. It’s a short drive or rideshare from the main drag, but worth the trip for sports historians.

No Alabama gameday experience would be complete without a trip to The Quad, the center of Tuscaloosa’s tailgate scene. Packed with tents and home to the famous Denny Chimes, it’s worth a walk through on gameday just to see the crowd. Feel free to mingle while you’re there — the fans are friendly, as long as you’re dressed in crimson.

Where to Shop

The Strip, downtown and the campus area are full of great places to shop. If you aren’t looking for anything specific, just walk around and see what you find.

For gameday and beyond, Mobley has been a Tuscaloosa go-to for gentlemen’s clothing for more than 50 years. The family business began in Tuscaloosa in 1971 and has since grown into a destination for menswear, collegiate apparel and custom clothing. The business consolidated its Tuscaloosa operations under one roof on McFarland Boulevard in 2026.

Know Before You Go

A nighttime kickoff makes for a long day in Tuscaloosa, so be sure to pace yourself accordingly. The sun will be out during the day, and temperatures are expected to be warm, but the evening will be cooler, so pack a jacket or sweater if you’re prone to the chills. And as always, don’t forget to lather up with your favorite SPF for sun protection.

Campus gets packed early and stays that way well after the final whistle blows, so be sure to plan your parking out or get there very early before it fills up.
